Water tastes better without the plastic

CCSO Green Team admire their new plastic-free water cooler. Nice!

Normally, the CCSO Green team wouldn’t be able to stand in this spot as the space was once filled with these…waterbottle-8

8 big plastic bottles of water, the number of bottles they went through every month, now
made obsolete by their new plastic-bottle-free water cooler! Beyond the major cost-savings, there’s no more plastic and no more not-so-tasty-microplastic (microplastics found in 93% of bottled water). This takes city water directly from the pipe, filters it, cools it, available to happy staff at the push of a tab-thingy.

This not only saves the plastic bottles, it saves the gas used to truck the bottles to their office. In fairness to the water cooler industry, the 5 gallon bottles would be reused several times, then recycled … unlike most of their smaller cousins (only an estimated 14% of water bottles make it to recycling plants in Ontario). That said, the fossil fuels burned and GHGs emitted to move these around are here for a long time.

Here’s a sense of how many bottles they saved in a year by this one change…

For more on the great work by the CCSO team …

Correction (Nov 21, 2018): and earlier version of this story misidentified the team as DMOH Green Team instead of CCSO Green Team. OMG, we are SRRY.
