The city of Toronto has officially started the new year with Winter Commute Month 2023, which will run from February 1st to 28th. This initiative is designed to encourage choosing sustainable travel options during one of the most challenging seasons for commuting. Through the Smart Commute network, of which UHN is a member, we have access to numerous resources to help make the switch including the Smart Commute App.
Sustainable travel refers to the concept of reducing the negative impact of transportation on the environment, while also benefiting individuals and communities. At its core, sustainable travel is about finding a balance between meeting our transportation needs and preserving the planet for future generations. This means using modes of transportation that are more environmentally friendly (i.e. fewer fossil fuels), such as public transportation, biking, and walking, and minimizing the use of cars and other single-occupancy vehicles. By embracing sustainable travel options, we can reduce our carbon footprint, improve air quality, and create more livable, sustainable communities.
In today’s world, many of us are faced with the challenge of finding a sustainable and convenient way to commute to work. Whether you’re working from home or in the office, Smart Commute Toronto wants to hear your story. During the month of February, Smart Commute is encouraging employees at participating workplaces to share their sustainable commute stories using emojis on their official Twitter page.

By sharing your story, you’ll have the chance to win one of ten $50 gift cards from popular retailers like MEC, The Bay, Canadian Tire, and PRESTO. To participate, simply tweet your sustainable commute story using emojis only. Whether it’s taking public transportation, carpooling, cycling, or teleworking, we want to hear about it!
In addition to tweeting your story, you can also log your sustainable commute trips on the SmartCommute.ca website or app (available for iOS and Android) for even more chances to win. Logging your trips on the website or app will also help us track the impact of sustainable commuting on our communities and the environment.
So what are you waiting for? Share your sustainable commute story and win big this February with Smart Commute! Get creative with your emoji stories and show the world how you’re making a difference by choosing a sustainable way to commute.
