As we enter our sixth year of implementing sustainable practices in our lab, we are proud to continue our efforts in recycling ice packs to keep them from ending up in landfills. During transportation, pharmaceuticals and other materials require refrigeration to remain effective. As a result, we receive a large quantity of gel ice packs, which are typically discarded despite being in excellent condition for reuse. Over the years, we have built strong relationships with community partners who share our commitment to sustainability. Now in our fourth month into the new year, we’ve donated a total of 675 pounds of ice packs to organizations across the GTA!
Though the program initially started collections at Krembil Discovery Tower in 2018, it has now expanded to include Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Research Tower, as well as Toronto Western Hospital. In just 2022 alone, over 1600 kilograms of ice packs were recycled and diverted from the landfill.
See below for the kind of ice packs we do and do not accept:
In January of this year, we had the pleasure of donating 75 pounds of ice packs to Haven on the Queensway. This organization, dedicated to serving vulnerable populations, works extensively to enhance the quality of life for those in need by providing food, clothing and other resources.

In March, we donated 250 pounds of ice packs to Regeneration Outreach, a community organization based in Brampton, Ontario. Our collaboration with Regeneration Outreach reflects our shared values of environmental responsibility and community engagement. Though Regen started as a 4-day breakfast program, it has multiplied and become a 365-day facility that offers several life-giving programs and services.
Finally, we are thrilled to announce that in late March, Froggabio accepted 350 pounds of ice packs from us. Froggabio is a leading biotech company that shares our commitment to sustainability, and we are proud to work with them to reduce waste and promote environmentally responsible practices.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to finding new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and build partnerships that advance our shared goals. Together, we can make a difference for the planet and for our communities. As we continue our efforts towards sustainability, we encourage you to check out our Earth Month page for more information on how you can get involved and make a positive impact on our planet.
Awesome stuff!!
