October 21 kickstarts Waste Reduction Week (WRW) across Canada and sparks the 4th annual WRW Inter-Hospital Challenge! The challenge is simple: each hospital or health network aims for the greatest participation rate on the WRW quiz (link below). The quiz is a fun way to learn and reinforce the most wasteless behaviours.
If you work at (deep breath):
- Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare,
- Michael Garron Hospital / Toronto East Health Network,
- Norfolk General Hospital,
- SickKids,
- Sinai Health System,
- Unity Health Toronto, or
- University Health Network,
Take the 3 minute quiz on your 3R’s … 5R’s now, actually: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot (compost). By dividing the number of participants by number of staff, sites of all sizes can compete fairly against each other. The more that play, the more we all win.

Help your site win the Stein of Sustainability, the Royal Highness of Reusable Cups! Not only will you help your site win, you will also qualify to win some eco-fabulous prizes given out by your hospital.
For those at UHN, we’ve added another layer this year, Textile Recycling! Starting a collection box is as easy as 1 – 2 – 3. All WRW Inter-Hospital Challenge sites are welcome to collect too, just designate your own pickup contact.
And if you’d like to weigh in on how to reduce single use stuff in our city, like straws, bags, cups, cutlery and styrofoam, #CityofTO wants to hear from you: toronto.ca/single-use/
Have a look at Waste Reduction Week Canada’s website for a lot more good stuff … https://wrwcanada.com/en, especially in moving us from the linear economy (which only works in the long run if we have 4 extra planets to trash) to a circular one (which works now and forever). Love their themed days…
